A veterinarian may be described as a physician for animals and a practitioner of veterinary medicine. Veterinarians look after animals at every step of their life, from birth to geriatric care. Veterinary Education Requriements:
To practice as a Vet, one needs to obtain a degree in Veterinary medicine and also a license to practice. Those who aspire to pursue a career in this field must be a graduate with either a Doctor of veterinary medicine, or any such equivalent degree for veterinarians. An alternate to become a licensed veterinarian with a directorate is to become a veterinary technician. Veterinary technicians are graduated with degree program legally qualified to assist veterinarians in many medical procedures. In addition to course requirements, they need to qualify tests such as Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), veterinary College Admission Test (VCAT), or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
Veterinary Work Environment:
 Generally, veterinarians prefer private practice, often having their own clinic. Rural veterinarians are more likely to travel dealing with large animals. The job duties demand a high level of focus and interpersonal skills are also an important aspect of the job. At times they have to work for long durations in noisy indoor environments. They also have to deal with emotional and demanding pet owners. While examining animals that are injured, they pose the risk of being bitten or scratched. They have to work on irregular timings, weekend work, emergency situations and unexpected appointments. Also veterinarians have to work in non-clinical areas, such as public health and research.
Besides work experience and educational qualification, the salary largely depends on the branch of practice. Even in case of private clinics, the salary of veterinarians depends upon whether he is a specialist, owns the clinic and possesses substantial work experience. Furthermore geographical location of the clinic also plays a substantial role in determining salary. |
